Hangry: bad tempered or irritable as a result of hunger; also the title of the most recent short film from UK Indie writer/director Daniel Harding.
Fusing classic horror elements with a modern twist (and adding a few dashes of macabre humour), a posh British couple, Clarey (Sophie Dearlove) and Boyd (Neil James), are taking a trip away from the stresses of their big city life, though, along the way, get lost in the countryside. Both a bit peckish, a surly, ornery attitude begins to seep into their conversation – I am quite sure we have all been there before.
Having already stopped for directions once, Boyd decides to pull over again upon spotting a man standing on the side of the road (Jack Kristiansen). . . it never seems to cross either of their minds that it is a bit odd to see a guy dressed in a long black cloak (à la Grim Reaper) out in the middle of nowhere. Adding a flourish that would befit the Medieval era, he addresses the rural gent, his queries only answered with a soul smelling sniff and an ominous point (with a wrapped finger no less) in a seemingly wayward direction. Will the couple find the way to their destination? What will come of the mysterious man’s directions?
Bringing to mind Victor Sjöström’s 1921 silent masterpiece The Phantom Carriage, as well as any other hooded figure who has stalked his prey (think I Know What You Did Last Summer or Dementors in the Harry Potter franchise), this character carries with it a lot of preconceived notions, yet Harding cleverly flips the script, playing with the viewer’s expectations, bringing forth a few savvy turns along the way.
Matched with a jaunty, playful score (with exquisite horror touches) composed by Gus Nicholson and Eunseog Lee, the music, direction, editing and performances push this just shy of five minute short on at a wonderful pace. Leading down a road less expected than what was once thought, what comes is a satisfying conclusion that will most definitely slake your hunger for a horror/comedy hybrid. So, bite into this 2017 short, you’ll have a bloody good time.
