What Could Have Been: One Battle After Another

A rush job of a film, the slasher mystery thriller Schizoid (1980) came about when writer and director David Paulsen bumped into the film’s producer, Menahem Golan, asking him if he’s got any good ideas. Coming up with something for the next day, he was given a measly two weeks to polish off a script, and a few more weeks before it went into production... the only other stipulation, there’s got to be a starring part for Klaus Kinski. Not usually a recipe for success, it is immediately evident that this is guerilla film making at its most rushed. But, at the same time, something rather interesting happened – a cast came together that makes this murder mystery a bit more complex... more on that a little bit later.

The second Missed the Bloody Cut horror selection of this 2024, here are some more horror movies that did not meet my strict criteria (a rating of 7.0 or higher). . . but are still entertaining films (horror fanatics may enjoy) that do not deserve to be ignored like an ever growing group of peckish birds – and that are definitely worth a watch (just maybe not several re-watches).

It was another exciting weekend in the city of Cornwall, as CAPE, or the Cornwall and Area Pop Event, returned once more (like any good superhero franchise) – this time attracting more than 3,500 excited visitors for the Saturday and Sunday festivities on April 20th and 21st, 2024. People of all ages, many in glorious costume (ranging from Evel Knievel and Deadpool to fantastical personal creations), flooded the Benson Centre, primed to explore its many exciting booths. . . fans were excited to see similar items from previous years, including retro toys, Funko pops, original artwork, comic books and literature, while they were also lucky enough to find some new vendors offering up unique items that have not been seen at the event for many a year – including vintage movie posters (Rolled & Folded Movie Posters), old school video games (Video Game Mansion), and a cool array of goodies from Cornwall Stamp Co. - Rock & Roll Print Shop.

Arguably one of the more bizarre buddy cop action/comedy films ever made, 1988's Dead Heat, written by Terry Black (brother of buddy cop screenwriter extraordinaire Shane Black – think Lethal Weapon and The Nice Guys... who cameos as a Patrolman in this one), and directed by Mark Goldblatt, fuses the tried and true formula within a Los Angeles set zombie storyline. Meet Doug Bigelow (Joe Piscopo) – cousin to Deuce, and Roger Mortis (Treat Williams) – and I think he’s the brother of Rigor, two officers who drive around town in a red 1960 Chevrolet Impala convertible – very inconspicuous. The former’s goofball jokey, the latter’s the more refined sort, together, they’re chaos.

The second Missed the Bloody Cut horror selection of this 2023, here are some more horror movies that did not meet my strict criteria (a rating of 7.0 or higher)... but are still entertaining films (horror fanatics may enjoy) that do not deserve to be shrugged off like the lights going out simply because it’s an ‘old home’ – and that they are definitely worth a watch (just maybe not several re-watches).
