Missed the Bloody Cut: 2026 (Part 1)

There may be no better film to fit within the ‘What Could Have Been’ category than New York Ninja. Filmed all the way back in 1984 by famed martial artist John Liu in the Big Apple, as things progressed, they really didn’t... as 21st Century Film Corporation Inc. was going through financial issues and internal changes – meaning the money dried up. Soon, the movie, though relatively close to completion, was shelved, leaving it to sit ignored for close to 35 years. Never edited into any sort of complete form (nor having a soundtrack created for it), as the years passed, all the sound that was recorded was lost to time – leaving just the raw footage (there wasn’t even credits or notes for any of the actors who worked on the project).

You know, it is always energizing attending a first year event. Being part of the birth of something new, feeling the excitement of a fresh hunting ground, as well as seeing the scaffolding being set up for the growth of an event that will likely thrive for years to come, is always a sight to behold... and that was certainly the case with Nepean’s first ever Horror-Fi, hosted at the Nepean Sportsplex on June 13th and 14th, 2026. Brought to vivid life by Geeked Out’s Shannon and Patrick O’Neill, they’ve certainly done their research

When low budget B movies were produced back in the 1950s, studios (in this case, Columbia) never really expected that much from them... but as you might already know, especially when it came to fun sci-fi horror monster movies, they tended to hit the sweet spot for what movie audiences wanted. One such example is Robert Gordon’s cephalopod-centric It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955).

Wow, another year, another CAPE... also known as the Cornwall and Area Pop Event, which celebrated its impressive 11th anniversary on April 25th and 26th of 2026. Furthering the celebration of all things pop culture – think film, television, animation, cos-play, comic books, video games, and so very much more, it is hard to believe that it has now brought more than a decade’s worth of memorable fun. Drawing thousands from in and outside the city of Cornwall (good luck finding a parking spot!) for the two day event, the Benson Centre was packed with joyous people exploring the diverse activities

Already getting buzz as one of the top films of this past year and perhaps being in line for the Academy Award Best Picture next month, One Battle After Another (2025), written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (and inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Vineyard”), features big stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro, and has everything going for it... meaning that it should wow and amaze. Yet, from a screenplay perspective, a lot is missing... despite being nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay as well.

Back in 2020, I decided that it would be a good idea to post a top ‘25 Films of the Decade’ list to celebrate some of the best films of the 2010s... it took some tinkering (lots of crossing this one off and adding that one) – but I’ve got to say, the response made it absolutely worth it. With all that feedback, many asked if I could do the same for the decade before... it has taken longer than expected, but good things come to those who wait. So, without further ado, here are the best of the 2000s ... with a short description as to why each film made the cut.
